Unconscious bias

At the European level, the ERC (European Research Council) encourages all assessors to watch the video Recruitment Bias in Research Institutes developed by CERCA (Catalan Research Centres Institute). The video aims to clarify bias in recruitment processes and assessment of research projects that can impede a real assessment of both male and female applicants.

Search committees

The purpose of using search committees is to explore the market for qualified candidates, domestically and abroad, and to ensure the representation of more than one gender.

A search committee must be used for the following positions:

  • Professor and associate professor/senior researcher appointed for at least 3 years and at least 50 percent
  • Permanent assistant professor (tenure track)

The search committee must find at least three candidates that as a group represent more than one gender. If this is not possible, the dean of the faculty concerned must grant an exemption.
